If you’re struggling with utility bills, New Jersey offers several utility assistance programs. The Universal Service Fund (USF) provides monthly credits on electric and gas bills, with the USF-Fresh Start program forgiving overdue balances. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps with heating costs and certain cooling expenses for eligible households.
The Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) Program offers relief for low to moderate-income households. For seniors specifically, the Lifeline Program provides annual energy benefits to qualified seniors and disabled individuals.
The Winter Termination Program protects eligible customers from utility shutoffs between November 15 and March 15. Additionally, Comfort Partners offers free energy-saving home improvements to reduce bills.
Income eligibility varies by program and household size. To apply, visit energyassistance.nj.gov, call the NJ Utility Assistance hotline at 800-510-3102, or use the DCAid screening tool to determine eligibility.
